Kennebunk Philanthropist Waterhouse Dies at 95

KENNEBUNK, Maine — Longtime Kennebunk philanthropist Geraldine Waterhouse has died at age 95.

Bibber Memorial Chapel funeral home said she died Saturday.

Waterhouse’s $1.5 million endowment stoked a fundraising campaign to build the Waterhouse Center, an open-air pavilion with an ice rink.

The Portland Press Herald reports Waterhouse grew up with a love for ice skating and sought to bring the activity to Maine children. She said in 2014 that she was inspired to set up the endowment after she saw children skating on a temporary rink on the site of a former gas station.

Waterhouse was born in Canada and spent summer vacations at Kennebunk Beach with family. She moved to Maine permanently in 1964.

She also gave time and money to local causes such as the Animal Welfare Society.
